Day 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Air port and flight to Mekelle

 

Meet and greet you FANOS Ethiopia Tours representative at exit of luggage claim and transfer you to the hotel.

You will have an early breakfast and your first visit in Addis Ababa will be the National Museum. It houses numerous antiquarian relics and archaeological artifacts (most famous exhibit is the 3.5 million year old skeleton of Lucy). Then you will continue to visit Merkato, (the largest open market in Africa). And in the afternoon transfer to airport for flight to Mekelle.

Upon arrival, you will be met by our tour guide, drive by a minivan to a hotel where you will check and stay the night. Overnight stay in Axum Hotel or similar in Mekele.

 

Day 2: Drive to Hamed Ela (210 Km from Mekele) via Berehale

After having a breakfast you will drive to Hamed Ela (180 Km from Mekelle) via Berehaile. On arrival at Berehaile, you will pick up mandatory police, scouts, road guides, and permits for the Afar region.  On your way you will notice striking changes in scenery as you drop from 2,220 elevation to below sea level, the Dankile depression begins here. It is one of the most inhospitable regions of the world, but is nonetheless spectacular, full of eye-catching colors, as in the sulphur springs. The desert has several points lying more than 100 meters (328 ft) below sea level.

En route you will see many long caravans going to the salt mines and others coming out of the Danakil with their salt loaded camels. Overnight stay camping at Hamed Ela.

 

Day 3: Excursion to Ragad (Asebo) and Dallol Depression, 25 km from Hamed Ela

Early in the morning after having a breakfast you will have a day trip to Ragad (Asebo), the place where the salts are mined. Observe the breaking of the salt from the ground, cutting into rectangular pieces and loading on camels.

Then you drive ahead to Dallol(116 meter below sea level, one of the lowest places in the world) and visit the difference landscape formed by volcanic activity, Dallol  includes  the Sulfur lake , Salt mountain, colourfull hot spring water, and Camel Caravan.

Later back to Hamed Ela. Then drive back to Mekelle.  On arrival in Mekelle, you will check into a hotel. Dinner. Time at leisure. Overnight stay in Axum Hotel or similar in Mekele.

 

Day 4: Flight to Lalibela via Addis Ababa

Mekele – Addis Ababa 08:50 – 10:00 and Addis Ababa – Lalibela 11:40 – 12:20

After breakfast, a short flight will take you to Lalibela. Upon arrival, you will be met by our tour guides, drive by a minivan to a hotel where you will check and rest for few minutes.

Your first visit will be to the eleven Rock-hewn Monolithic (carved from a single rock) Churches of Lalibela (UNESCO World heritage site, with magnificent architecture & paintings inside the churches). On this day you will visit the first group (6 churches) & the third group (1 church). In the evening you will get back to the hotel, rest, have dinner and relax.  Overnight stay in Panoramic View hotel, Lalibela

 

Day 5:  Excursion to Yimrehane Christos

Right after breakfast, an early morning drive will take you to historical churches of Yemrehane Christos Church (45Km north of Lalibela, 1 hour drive) which is built in a cave. It is older than the churches in Lalibela and built in the old Axumite wood- and stone layers style. Later drive back to Lalibela for lunch.

Then in afternoon after Lunch, visit the second group of churches in Lalibela.  Overnight stay in Panoramic View Hotel, Lalibela.

 

Day 6: Flight to Gonder and Visit the Fassiladas Castles

Early morning, a short flight will take you to Gonder. Upon arrival, you will be met by our tour guides, drive to a hotel where you will check and rest for few minutes.

Then, you will visit to the Royal Castles & the Bath of Emperor Fasiledes (the bath is filled with water for the important Timkat (epiphany) ceremony once a year.  You will continue your visit to Debre Birhan Selassie Church (Trinity at the Mount of Light). Overnight stay in Goha hotel, Gonder.

 

Day 7: Flight back to Addis Ababa & continue your visit in Addis Ababa

After a relaxed breakfast, a short flight will bring you back to Addis Ababa. Continue your visit in Addis Ababa. You will continue to visit Mount Entoto (3,200 above sea level. The Church of St Mary (1885) and Emperor Menelik II Palace. The Entoto Museum, with its historical exhibits is well worth a visit.

After lunch you will visit Trinity Cathedral. It was constructed by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1947 (ornamented with carvings and mosaic and other artistic works such as paintings of saints and the apostles on the stained glass).

In the evening you will get back to the hotel, rest, have dinner and relax. Overnight stay in Oasis Hotel Apartment, or Similar accommodation in Addis Ababa.

 

Day 8: Flight Arba Minch & drive to Dorze

Addis Ababa – Arba Minch: Departure 12:00 Arrival 13:05 1hr & 5 minutes

After a relaxed breakfast, a short flight will bring you back to Addis Ababa. You will arrive in Addis Ababa midday/early afternoon. Check in again for flight to Arba Minch. You will have lunch in the airport terminal.

In the afternoon you will take a short flight to Arba Minch with a vehicles waiting for you at the airport for a pick up to a lodge for check in.

Upon arrival you will drive to Dorze people (48Km from Arba Minch, 1hour drive) are famous for their beehive shaped huts made of Bamboo leaves and weaving culture. In a Dorze village a local guide will take you to a compound of the Dorze people to visit their house and see their life style. The housewife will show you how a kind of flour is prepared from the stem of the enset tree (false banana) which is fermented and used to prepare porridge and sour flat bread. Make a walk in the village, passing the Dorze settlements, and visit a weaving and a potter’s cooperation. Overnight stay in Dorze lodge.

 

Day 9:  Drive to Arba Minch, visit Lake Chamo

After a breakfast you will make a boat trip on Lake Chamo where you will see the crocodile market. One can spot many hippos and the world’s most spectacular concentrations of Giant Crocodiles. (It is locally called as the crocodile market) the water birds are great the scenery is truly unforgettable. Fishing for Nile perch and many other species by locals on their traditional boat is by far the best in the country. You will also watch various low land water birds like the African Fish Eagle, Great white pelicans, egrets, etc.

In the afternoon follow your own program. Optional excursion: Visit to Forty springs and local market in Arba Minch. Believed by local to carry scared healing properties, the Forty Springs located in Nech Sar Park are the natural wonder that gave Arba Minch its name. Come dip in the pure waters in these lush natural surroundings. Take time around the local market.

In the evening you will have dinner at the lodge and stay the night there. Overnight stay in Paradise or emerald hotel & resort.

Day 10:Drive to Jinka via Key afar  

In the morning, you will have breakfast and drive to Jinka (270 Km from Arba Minch). You will have lunch at Konso. Then you will be driven to Jinka and check into a resort.

On arrival in Jinka visit the ethnographic museum in Jinka, that display the culture, traditions, and way of life the 16 ethnic groups of Omo valley. In the evening you will have dinner at the lodge and stay the night there. Overnight stay in Jinka Resort or Jinka Eco Omo Lodge.

 

Day 11: Excursion to Mursi village and drive to Turmi

In the morning after breakfast, you will be driven to Mursi (55 Km from Jinka) and visit to the of Mursi tribe village (popularly known for their attractive culture, women wearing large clay plates into their lower lips). Then you will drive back to Jinka for lunch. 

After lunch you will be driven to Turmi (142 Km from Jinka). On the way, depending on the time visit the Thursday Key afar local marketthat gather Benna, Tsemay, Malle, and Hammer ethnic groups (Optional excursion).

You will arrive in Turmi early evening and check into a lodge. You will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi lodge.

 

Day 12: Excursion to Omorate to visit Dassench tribe

An early morning drive will take you to Omorate to visit the Dassench tribe (75 Km from Turmi). From there, you will take a boat trip on the Omo River and visit the Dassench/Geleb village.

After a brief break you will then walk to the non-touristic Hammer Village to explore the Hammer tribes (best known for elaborate hairstyles, body painting using clays and vegetable pigments to make fantastic patterns on their faces, chests, arms and legs), Optional excursions; attend the bull jumping – if possible and available with luck.

In the evening, you will be driven back to the lodge for dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi Lodge.

 

Day 13: Excursion to Murille to visit Karo tribe

An early morning drive will take you to Murille to visit the Karo tribe (62 Km from Turmi). You will visit the Karo village.

Then you will get back to Turmi for lunch. In the afternoon you will have free time or follow your own program or visit another Hammer village. Dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi Lodge.

 

Day 14: Drive to Konso

In the morning after breakfast, you will be driven to Konso (160 Km from Turmi, famous for their colorfully costumed dresses, impressive terracing of land - recently registered as World heritage by UNESCO, and engraved wooden statues grave markers).

You will arrive early in the afternoon. Checking in to the lodge. Lunch. In the afternoon visit Konso Village. Overnight stay in Kanta Lodge, Konso.

 

Day 15: Visit the Konso Village & drive back to Arba Minch

After breakfast you will be driven to not touristic& UNESCO registered Konso village, where you will spend the day visiting and taking pictures. You will have lunch in Kanta lodge. Early/mid in the afternoon drive to Arba Minch (90 Km from Konso). Check into a lodge. You will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Paradise or Swaynes Lodge.

 

Day 16: Drive back to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, you will be driving to Addis Ababa. You will arrive in Addis Ababa late afternoon where you will do some shopping for souvenirs.

Finally you will be taken to a farewell dinner to Ethiopian (Habesha 2000 or YOD Abyssinia) traditional restaurant where you will taste Ethiopian food & drinks and a live music & dance.

Then depending on your scheduled flight; you will be transferred out to Bole International Airport for return flight back home.
